I grew up in the east end of Ottawa and have many childhood memories of walking to Westgate Mall to get candy.

I remember pixie stixs, sponge toffee, black balls and more.

Naturally a store like Sugar Mountain is right up my alley. It’s so much fun to take the kids and show them what “mommy use to eat”.

Here’s a few photos of candy that I remember eating when I was a kid.

remember these?

love these!!

But the best part of my last trip to Sugar Mountain was to discover that COCONUT M&M’s are in Toronto. I no longer have to find them in the States. HOORAY.

From 2011...not 1975

I tweeted this picture immediately(cause I was so happy) and there was a flood of replies from other coconut m&m fans.

So tell me…whats your favorite candy from your childhood? was it a chocolate bar? or was it candy?

I love those Fizz candies! My family is British, so Cadbury chocolate (such as Flake) is a favourite. I also love those red gummy candies shaped like feet… (somehow the shape isn’t enough to put me off!)

Great pic of Thrills – used to chew it all the time. Tastes like soap! Wow, where to begin? Those wax sticks with the liquid inside – loved those. And Sherbet – that powdery stiff with the licorice stick in the yellow pack. Sweet tarts of course and pop rocks. Charleston Chew – remember that? It was a long chocolate or strawberry sort of candy bar. Ton of Gum (that was the name) – a big teeth rattling pack of gum. Popeye candy cigarettes. Lolas. Nestele’s $100,000 bar. Oh, remember bottle caps? They were soda pop flavoured candy shaped like bottle caps

My favourite thing from Sugar Mountain are the mini ice cream cones filled with maple syrup! They are so sticky that it takes forever to eat one! mmm!

Pez. It wasn’t the Pez that was good, it was the amazing dispensers! Also, button candy and candy necklaces.

My all time favourite (even in the present) are those McIntosh toffee bars. We used to put them in the freezer and then smash them and gnaw away at the shards. I’m actually drooling as I type this!
