I absolutely adore Thai food but for some reason I don’t seem to go out for it a lot. I guess one could say that I’m “selective” when it comes to eating Thai food.  Therefore, I was thrilled to have received an invitation to attend an invitation only gala reception at Linda Modern Thai, who was receiving a special designation called “Thai Select”.

I started off my meal with these delicious appetizers. To be honest…I could eat these appetizers all night and be very happy. This type of dish represents exactly what I’m looking for when dining in a Thai restaurant. Not to mention, it’s the perfect meal for someone who is eating low carb!!

My favourite dish!!

My favourite dish!!

I then enjoyed every drop of my Tom Yum Soup with Mushrooms. This is a classic Thai soup made with homemade stock, enoki, beech and maitake mushrooms. I love this flavorful soup and felt compelled to order it, even though I could have ordered a Mango Salad or the Thai Lobster Bisque!!

The meal continued with a few more tasty dishes: Crispy Beef Panang (my favourite), Red Snapper with Rustic Chili Sauce (amazing execution) Stewed Duck with Chestnuts, Pineapple Yellow Curry, and Royal Pad Thai. There was no shortage of food at this event!!

I not only only enjoyed my meal but also learned something interesting from Mr Ben Heller who works for the Thai Consulate General. I learned that in Thailand – forks are used as a serving utensil and only the spoon is used as an eating utensil.  One won’t see chopstick or knives!

I also learned that Linda Modern Thai is one of a handful of Thai restaurants that have received the Thai Select designation. This internationally recognized designation is a mark of certification that guarantees the authenticity of a Thai restaurant and food products that have been prepared with ingredients and spices in the traditional style of Thai cooking.  Linda Modern Thai is the first Canadian recipient of the Thai Select Premium Designation. Congratulations!!

Back in 1994, I ate at P.F. Chang’s in Las Vegas. See, I was a foodie even in 1994! I remember how impressed I was with their vegetarian options and can still remember ordering their famous Lettuce Wraps. (which are still on the menu). Now I don’t have to eat at P.F. Chang’s in the States anymore , as they have finally arrived in Canada! Just last week, they opened at Shops At Don Mills. I’m pleased to say…that they still have vegetarian options and now offer gluten free options as well.

Here were a few highlights of the evening.

Would go back for this dish – in a heart beat

Described on the menu as: Sushi grade ahi tuna served with a spicy mustard vinaigrette on a bed of fresh mixed greens.

Described by my belly and taste buds: I want more.

Not your average green beans

Described on the menu: Fresh green beans lightly battered and served with a tangy dip.

Described by my belly and taste buds: Goodness.

Dessert was epic. I’m not kidding. My eyes were popping out of my face.

Described on the menu: 6 rich layers of frosted chocolate cake topped with semi-sweet chocolate chips, served with fresh berries and raspberry sauce. Appropriately called: The Great Wall of Chocolate!!

Described by my belly and taste buds: There are no words.

Banana Spring Rolls

Described on the menu: 6 warm, crispy bits of banana served with coconut pineapple ice cream and drizzled with caramel and vanilla sauce.

Described by my belly and taste buds: Please take me back to P.F. Chang’s.

As you know, I’m on a carb free diet so I tried hard to just nibble my way thru the media dinner. I can’t wait to go back when I’m not on this diet and can really indulge.

I’m not kidding..it’s great to see this fabulous restaurant in Toronto. What a welcome addition to the already amazing selection of restaurants at Shops at Don Mills.

P.F. Chang’s can be found at Shops at Don Mills, 1090 Don Mills Road, 416 510 8838

Halumi Sandwich! YUM

I have no idea how I got introduced to the Halumi Sandwiches at Aroma Espresso Bar but it’s the only thing I have eaten there , despite knowing that their salads are fantastic too. I also enjoy their coffee, but once in a while I crave their Halumi Sandwich.

I have a feeling that I like this sandwich so much cause no one else makes it!! If I had to break it down even further, I would say that Aroma has all the right elements for making this sandwich perfect:

-unique ingredients (halumi, a pickle, lettuce, tomato)

-the right thickness of FRESH bread (white, multigrain or whole wheat).

I have been to a few Aroma locations in the GTA (thanks to the perks of being a sales rep!!) – the Promenade Shopping Centre, Bloor St, Yonge/Eglinton and Rutherford Plaza too. Next on my list is to visit their latest location at Don Mills Centre. I like the space and feel of Aroma so much that I once inquired about renting the Bloor St. location for a party (it was declined – but that’s ok – we rented Steam Whistle and had a great party there).

So next time you are looking for a unique sandwich – check out Aroma Espresso Bar, K?

Locations:

Aroma Espresso Bar  500 Bloor St. W.

Aroma  Espresso Bar 2300 Yonge St (Yonge/Eglinton)

Aroma Espresso Bar  1090 Don Mills (Don Mills Centre)

Aroma Espresso Bar  9320 Bathurst (Rutherford Plaza)

Aroma  Espresso Bar 121 King St. West (Standard Life Building)

I hear buzz that an Aroma is opening in Forest Hill Village. Stay Tuned!!
