I went to three Food Trade Shows in one week!!. As I walked thru the aisles of the CHFA show, I realized that I’ve mastered the skill of “sampling”. I can now add that to my list of skills on my Linkedin profile. (ha). This is the annual trade show for the Canadian Health Food Association and a great opportunity for me to find more new products to share with my readers (that’s you).

Here’s a few items that I’d like to share with you:

MONKEY TOAST:  These are flavour packed fruit crisps that are dairy free, and nut free. Ideal for kids and big kids too (like me).  I also adore their packaging and the fact that they are a Canadian company. (B.C. to be exact)

show - monkey

MACKIE’S CRISPS: All their potato crisps are suitable for vegetarians and their line up includes flavours like Haggis & Cracked Black Pepper, Scotch Bonnet Chilli Pepper and Aberdeen Angus steak. On a side note: My mom is from Scotland and I have family there so I have a soft spot for any product that is Scottish.

show -mackies

OHMBARS; This date and seed bar is Dairy free, Gluten free and is made in Ottawa (where I grew up). Naturally this caught my attention too.

show - ohm

CAPLANSKY’S MUSTARD:  I read on facebook about this new line of mustard and was delighted to see this new product at the Neal Brothers  booth. I sampled all of them (of course). Today I read that there’s a new menu being launched at Caplansky’s which means I really need to visit so I can try the mustard on meat instead on a pretzel!!

(note: stole this photo from Facebook. Hope you don’t mind Peter).

As always, had a great time wandering the aisles of this show. No shortage of new products to try!!

This event sounds right up my alley. Here’s why:

a) I’m a fan of the Neal Brothers (see previous blog post)

b) I’m a fan of Dillon’s (see previous blog post)

c) the price is right ($10 online or $15 at the door)

d) it supports a great charity (My Food Way)

e) the event combines food, chefs, music, and a fun competition!

I chatted with Abbey who told me she was eager to host a food event that involved a competition as well as supporting a charity.  The Neal Brothers got involved too as they thought it would be a great fit with their 25th anniversary. The rest is history.

As you know I’m a huge fan of the National Post Gastropost missions. I’m such a fan that not only do I participate on a regular basis, but I decided I wanted to interview them too! For those of you who might not know what Gastropost is all about – I will explain: Every week Gastropost posts a mission (i.e a cookie mission) and people (like me and many many others) submits a photo thru Twitter, Facebook, email or Instagram. It’s as simple as that. On Saturday – the cookie photo that you submitted might be included in the Gastropost section.

Gastropost staff chat with a George Brown Culinary Arts student!

Here’s the interview:

a) Who initiated the initial idea to have a Gastropost feature in the
National Post?

There were a few people involved. In early 2012 National Post and
Postmedia Network Inc. (which owns National Post as well as a number of
other well-known newspapers like Ottawa Citizen, Calgary Herald, Vancouver
Sun, etc) started working on a plan to be more directly engaged with
readers in a different way. We recognized that Toronto was in the middle
of a food renaissance and that there were lots of food lovers who were not
only passionate about food and their city, but also had a lot of expertise
to share. In mid-May we came up with the Gastropost concept of weekly food
missions, then worked with the excellent National Post design and
editorial teams to launch it just two weeks later. We move fast!

b) I’m assuming everyone is a “foodie” who works on Gastropost… True of
False?

We love food, yes! But honestly, we’ve always believed that Gastroposters
themselves are the experts. Even before we launched we made sure to
connect and involve a few of the community’s leading voices, and now we’re
learning new things from our members every day. (Incidentally, we also
discovered early on that even some hard-core food people don’t consider
themselves “foodies,” which is why we talk about “food lovers” instead. We
try to make room for diehard foodies and more casual food lovers alike.)

c) Have you ever received a food photo and found yourself going out later
that day to purchase that item?

You have no idea how difficult it can be to watch all of your delicious
food photos roll in all day! Our office collectively gains a few pounds
every time we host one of the more decadent or indulgent missions. So yes,
we for sure look to Gastroposters for both home cooking and dining out
inspiration.

d) When was Gastropost launched?

In late May 2012 we sent our first mission ‹ simply, “Eat something
delicious!” ‹ to a small handful of Gastropost pioneers, the results of
which were in National Post for the first time on June 2nd. We’ve been in
the paper every Saturday since, and a few weekdays as well, meaning this
week’s salad mission is mission number 35!

e) How many submissions do you normally receive a week?

As you might expect it varies a bit from week to week. We’ve had as many
as 300 different people complete a single mission, and often some people
complete the mission multiple times, meaning we would have received even
more than 300 individual missions. Since we’re growing, more missions are
being completed each week.

f) What’s been the most successful social media platform for
Gastropost…twitter, instagram or Facebook

That depends. Twitter is great for following and chatting with members,
which we love to do, and probably explains why we currently have more
followers on Twitter than anywhere else. Because it’s more visual we love
using Facebook to feature posts and announce new missions, and Facebook
polls do very well for us too. We only started posting mission
announcements to Instagram a couple months ago and we had a few hundred
followers before posing our first image, so there’s obviously a lot of
potential there. As far as how people complete missions, Instagram is
number one.

g) What’s the feedback been like?

Overwhelming and humbling. It’s so amazing how much people love Gastropost
and how expertly missions get completed. It’s motivating, inspiring and a
big part of why we love our jobs.

Congratulations to the entire team at Gastropost. What a great concept!!

Back in December, (Friday Dec 21st to be exact)  I went to Kensington Market to celebrate the Winter Solstice. I went last year and thought it was quite the event so I made a point of returning to celebrate the shortest day of the year once again!

The biggest bonfire I have ever seen!! trust me…

After marching down Augusta and witnessing the huge bonfire it was time to EAT something (and warm up). I had just bought a $10 for $5 deal on Buytopia for Dr. Augusta’s Samitorium and figured it was a really good time to use that deal! Not to mention, I was walking right by it. PERFECT.

The restaurant is located on the north west corner of Augusta and Dundas St. West (602 Dundas St W) and is one of those very casual restaurants. It’s a spacious restaurant with a long bar and a few stools so you can sit and enjoy your sandwich. It’s sparse but clean and exactly the type of cheap and cheerful restaurant I like!!

I ordered a sandwich  (the shrimp po’ boy) and managed to get a quick photo of it after I ate half. (silly me). I didn’t have my good camera either so please forgive the less-than-beautiful-photo. But please oh-please visit their facebook page for great quality photos that reflects the food that they are serving.

While inhaling my sandwich, I got the chance to speak to both of the owners behind the bar.

(L) Vlad and (R) Chris

Two friendly guys who know what they are doing in the kitchen as my sandwich was flavorful with just the right amount of everything.

I was also super impressed that they were making their own sodas too and can’t wait to return in the summer for a float.

Next time you are craving a sandwich, make sure to check out Dr. Augusta’s Samitorium.

I went to Arowhon Pines last year for my first time and was thrilled to be able to return. I love this property for these reasons:

a) Peace and Quiet: you will not hear powerboats or ski doos. The only thing you will hear will be the loons on the water and the birds. Sorry – no photos. The loons weren’t cooperative and kept diving underwater.

b) The Scenery: you can’t beat the scenery that comes with being in the heart of Algonquin Park.

Seriously…..this is the view from my bed.

Stunning.

d) The Food:  Everything at this resort is made in house. Everything. Each meal is outstanding not to mention the outstanding service. Plus you are dining in this spectacular structure. It truly is an experience.

I didn’t take a picture of the bread as I went there the first week I went carb free!!

d) Nature: This particular visit, we had the chance to see not just moose…but a fox and a HUGE turtle (on land and in the water). These encounters make the visit even more special.

A HUGE Turtle

e) Their Commitment to Local Food:  They are so committed to using local suppliers that they are holding their  2nd Annual 100 mile Challenge Summer BBQ on Monday Aug 6th from 12 p.m to 3 p.m. All food served will be grown within 100 miles of the resort. Tickets are limited and are $32 p.p. Click here for more information about this amazing event.

f) The Service and The Staff: Everyone is friendly, personable and professional. From the grounds keeper to the front desk staff! This property understands the word: hospitality!!

To find out more about this spectacular Ontario resort (which is only 3 hours North of Toronto) ..please call: 1 866 633 5661

I have succumbed to yet another social media obsession called Pinterest. You will notice a little gizmo on the side of my home page that says “follow me on Pinterest”. Some of you are probably asking “What is Pinterest”, so let me explain.

It’s basically a board that enables you to “PIN” things you like. Naturally I have a ‘food board”and a “design board” but you could have a “things that are funny board” or a board that is about “fashion” or a board for “planning an event”  etc. It’s very visual – it’s very easy to use -and it’s VERY ADDICTIVE.

One day I was skimming thru Pinterest and came across this photo:

Pinned Image

I said to myself “that is SO cool” and later that day found myself buying a fish bowl from the dollar store and then bought blue jello and swedish fish. I guess I was in a “Martha Stewart” kind of mood.

I also showed the above photo to a friend, who said ‘how are you going to get the fish to float?”. I replied “Im sure there’s instructions somewhere on the internet”. Guess what? Did not find ANY instructions and indeed my fish sank quicker than I could say “please don’t sink”.

I then morphed into Macguivre and started to pull together a few items that might help my fish from sinking: plastic forks, elastic bands, chopsticks and tape. DON”T ASK.

are you laughing yet?

I stuck the fish bowl into the fridge and when I pulled out the fish from the forks – it was not pretty.

HELP!!

Lesson to be learned: I am clearly not fit to try Martha Stewart projects and I’m not Macguivre. My final product did not come out anything remotely looking like the photo that I saw on Pinterest. But I must admit – I had a good laugh.

Fail...

By all means, if anyone wants to try this project and let me know how they prevented the fish from sinking – please let me know.

Best Ever Banana Muffin

The weather is finally getting cooler which means that I am back in the kitchen baking. If I had to pick three favorite items I like to bake – they would be: a) banana muffins c) chocolate chip cookies  and c) fruit crisps.

Basically I like to make anything that can freeze!!

This  particular blog entry will be dedicated to the Best Ever Banana Muffins!! Naturally this recipe is from the Toronto Star, (Sept 3, 20008) and is Star Tested. Just so you know, I’ve been a fan of the Toronto Star Wednesday Food Section for as long as I can remember.

Ingredients:

2 cups of mashed bananas (about 5) ps the darker the better

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 egg

1/3 cup melted butter

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

Method:

In a large bowl, mash bananas. (I use the mix master for this part – kinda like them really really mushy).

Sir in sugar and egg.

Add melted butter.

Stir in baking soda, baking powder, salt and flour to make a thick batter.

Fill each cup of a 12 cup muffin tin about 3/4 full. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 20 minutes.

THESE MUFFINS FREEZE BEAUTIFULLY.

**If you want you can also add 1 cup of chocolate chips to the batter.

Happy Baking.

Last week, I had the opportunity to visit the new Longos near the Air Canada Centre. That’s right, a 45,000 square foot grocery store is right in the smack of downtown Toronto.

The first thing that you notice is that the place is buzzing with staff, with customers, with suppliers, with head office  “suits”, etc. The second thing you notice is that there is prepared foods EVERYWHERE.

If I worked near by, I would be buying my salad there everyday.

Salad-to-go at Longos

Healthy Lunch Options.

I would hang out by the fire, on the leather couches, enjoying free wi-fi and a coffee.

Need to relax after shopping?

A perfect place to drink coffee.

I would even consider having a beer or a glass of wine at the bar.

Corks..a great place for wine or beer

Wine or Beer is served at Corks.

They have thought of everything!! I was so impressed.

Naturally I bought some beautiful kumquats and some other items so I could take advantage of the free parking if you purchase $30 0r more. Hey Longos…my pleasure to buy some groceries there. The produce was beautiful.

I will end this blog entry by saying “congratulations” to Longos for building a grocery store that will really appeal to the residents who live in condos nearby and to those office workers who work downtown.

Not to mention the fans who go to the ACC for hockey games or to concerts will also love Longos.

You won’t be disappointed.

Happy Grocery Shopping.

Vicky WeissNo pun intended, but Mom Who Runs is up and running and guess what? It’s an awesome feeling.

I have been using the name @momwhoruns as a twitter handle for the last year, so it only seemed fitting that I used the name for my website too.
The first question I am asked is: “Do you run?” and I reply “well kinda….I run coz I do small triathlons”.
I am by no means a runner. I am more like a shuffler. (I am not joking)

I’m hoping this blog will be  FUN and INFORMATIVE. (with the odd spelling mistake). I like sharing information. Period. It might be about a good book, a good store, a good nail polish color, a great birthday party idea etc.

Naturally I will be blogging about food a lot, as that seems to be a big interest these days.
So be prepared for blog posts about recipes.
Don’t tell me, that I didn’t warn you.
So today is the day that I welcome you to my website.

Hope you leave commnets, forward to friends, and by all means…subscribe (see that button on the right).

Welcome!!
