This should come as no surprise to you, but I am NOT a car expert. This blog entry will not include statistics, fancy engineering terms or anything techie. It’s going to simply be a review about my initial impressions driving a Chevy Volt for four  days (I know, I know…lucky me).

I spent 4 glorious days driving this car!!

First Impression:

I swear I pushed the button (no key necessary) to start the engine and immediately started to talk to myself. It’s a shame no one was in the car to video my reaction. I kept repeating “This is too cool..this is just too cool”.

Look at all this cool info!!

Second Impression:

The car feels “heavy” (but in a good way).  It did not feel like I was driving my Versa. I felt really safe driving it.

Third Impression:

How freakin’ cool to plug in my car at night to charge the battery ( it took 8 hours with a normal socket).

Brilliant.

Fourth Impression:

I drove for 65 km using the battery and then the car seamlessly starts to use the small gas powered engine.  It’s too cool

Fifth Impression:

Gas mileage on the Chevy Volt is insanely awesome.

Sixth Impression:

This car is QUIET. I mean really really QUIET. It’s scary how quiet it is!!

Seventh Impression:

This is the future.

Eight Impression:

I was so PROUD to be driving a car with this license plate.

"GREEN VEHICLE"

Ninth Impression

I wish I owned one!!

Last but not Least:

Thanks again to the good people at General Motors who arranged for me to drive this spectacular vehicle. It was truly an experience I won’t forget.

Last week, I had the pleasure to drive a Chevy Volt for  four full days which meant I was going on four day trips. There was no way an electric car was going to sit in my underground garage!! I was going to drive it and I did.(happily!!)

This blog post is dedicated to day #1 where I drove to Fergus Ontario (about an hour away from Toronto) so I could learn to fly fish with Wilson’s Fly Fishing Centre. I found them thru the internet (google, google google) and was thrilled to find out that they had some time to teach me how to fly fish.

Fly Fishing was not on my 2012 bucket list but it should have been. I have always wanted to try it but it’s not something you can just pick up and do. Wilson’s Fly Fishing Centre was the perfect place to learn. All I had to bring was sunglasses and a hat and they provide everything else.

When I walked thru the store, I was immediately greeted by my guide (and instructor) Rob. After the initial introductions, I changed into my waders, boots and a Wilson’s Fly Fishing Tshirt (what a nice touch) and off we went to the Grand River.

Within 20 minutes, we were wading thru the Grand River to find the “perfect spot”. Rob has been a professional fly fishing guide for over 12 years and is extremely passionate about this sport. I was quickly given “fly fishing 101” lessons and within no time at all – I was Fy Fishing!!

My Fly Fishing experience was highlighted by the fact that both Rob and I – BOTH caught brown trout. Except mine got away (my luck) and Rob had a chance to reel his catch in, so that I could take a photo.

ps...catch and release

I also found out that Wilson’s is one of only two stores in CANADA with multiple locations (a) downtown Toronto and (b) Fergus Ontario. Pretty cool.

All in all – I was thrilled to  have experienced fly fishing and to have caught a brown trout (even if he got away). Can you tell I’m still getting over it?

This means, that I’m just going to have to hang out with Wilson’s again!! It truly is a “fun” sport and you can’t beat the surroundings.

ideal

PS if you are looking for a unique birthday gift or a fathers day gift…..look no further. Give Wilson’s Fly Fishing School a call.

My next blog post will be dedicated to Day #2 and Day #3. Stay tuned for more of my adventures with the  Chevy Volt. Oh and don’t worry – I will be blogging about the Volt as well!!

INFO:

WIilson’s Fly Fishing Centre:- Toronto: 199 Queen St East (416) 569 34 74 (ps lessons are available in the GTA too)

WIlson’s Fly Fishing Centre – Fergus (519) 8787 3474

As you know, I’m kind of a “contest junkie” so when I saw a tweet from Insomnia saying they were giving away a pair of tickets to see the screening of HYSTERIA…..I was right on it.

I clicked on their facebook  page and saw this:

Insomnia Restaurant and Lounge

5 x FREE movie passes (admit two) to see Hysteria by entertainmentone at the Varsity Monday May 14th to the most interesting answers as to why you deserve the tickets.
(Answer in the comment section below this question on the fan page.) Open to all!
This was my reply:
Vicky Weiss um coz I like Free stuff. Does that make sense? Is that creative? LOL. Did it work? Do I win? (Im laughing as I write this)

Guess what? I won. Go figure.
I then quickly googled “Hysteria” as I had NO IDEA what I won. (always a good strategy…NOT). I quickly read a synopsis but really went into the movie with an open mind and NO expectations.
What I discovered was a completely entertaining movie. (so entertaining that I’m blogging about it). The cast was brilliant (Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, Maggie Gillenhaal) and I laughed my head off on more than one occasion. Not to mention the movie is based on a true story.
So what is the movie about? Believe it or not..it’s based on the invention of the vibrator. Please don’t judge me!! I’m reviewing the movie….not the product!!
If you are in the mood for a funny movie ..then this is the movie for you. Note: There is no nudity and  no swearing in this movie.
I really hope you get a chance to go see it.
Opening: May 25th!!
99 minutes
See you at the movies!!

Drinking With My Mom in Vegas. (a whole different blog post)

A few weeks ago, I was visiting Ottawa and stumbled upon a copy of  Fifty Shades of Grey in my moms’ room. I wasn’t exactly surprised seeing as I remember my mom buying Cosmopolitan and People magazine on a regular basis when I was a kid. She’s still VERY IN THE KNOW. Can you tell?

We had a conversation that went like this:

Me: Hey Mom…., um, noticed you had a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey in your bathroom. Did you read it?

73 year old mother: I not only read Fifty Shades of Grey but I read the entire trilogy.

Me: How did you hear about this book? Did all your friends read it?

73 year old mother: No..I was too embarased to tell them I read it. But they know now.

Me: How long did it take you to read the trilogy?

73 year old mother: A DAY!!!!

Me: What did you think?

73 year old mother: I have experienced sex but not much of the stuff in the book. Let’s just say it was a learning experience for me as I was reading these books.

Me: Did you tell Dad?

73 year old mother: NO. I don’t want to cause him to jump out of the wheel chair.

I asked her if I could borrow the book and she agreed but I’m SLOWLY getting thru it. I’m not flipping the pages as fast as I thought but then again, I am only on chapter 3.  I’m sure I would be reading it faster if I was on holiday.

Back to my mom..She’s cool eh? Wonder what she will be reading next!!

The last time I went to the Toronto Jewish Film Festival was to see a documentary called “The Shvitz”. I loved the film but for some reason never went back to the Jewish Film Festival. Tonite, I googled to find out when that movie was made and it was 1993. That’s right…1993.  So you could say, it was about time I returned to the Festival.

Well I certainly made up for lost time as I saw 5 movies in 48 hours. All of a sudden I became one of those “festival goers” – who studies the guide, circles the films that I wanted to see and becomes obsessed reading reviews.

See What I Mean?

Here’s what I saw. (funny…usually I write, Here’s What I Ate). LOL.

I saw 5 movies in 2 days..which meant I was pretty busy running to the Bloor Cinema (which is stunning by the way) and the Sheppard Centre.

4 out of 5 tickets. Proof that I kept busy.

Salsa in Tel Aviv, Israel 2011, Spanish, Hebrew, Director: Jorge Weller.

I really enjoyed this movie. It had great characters, beautiful scenes of Israel and a funny story.  Not to mention I had a slight crush on the main actor who was beyond handsome. It was a great way for me to get introduced to the Israeli Film Festival. Total Score.

How To Re-Establish a Vodka Empire, UK 2011, Director: Dan Edelstyn

A well executed documentary that revealed a humorous and fascinating journey. The audience has a chance to witness this young filmmaker as he tries to revive a village in Ukraine by rebranding and distributing vodka back in London.

Off White Lies, Israel, France, Hebrew Director: Maya Kenig

A drama that focuses on the relationship between a young 13 year old girl who has come to live with her estranged father in Israel. It was probably my least favorite movie out of the 5 movies I saw but I still enjoyed it.

Deaf Jam, USA 2011, Director Judy Lieff

This was the best movie I saw. I left this movie inspired, moved and in total awe of the cast and the vision of the director. I would see this movie again in a heart beat. I really hope that this film becomes available on DVD one day soon. What was it about? It was about ASL (American Sign Language) poetry and some amazing students and teachers.

Polish Bar, USA 2010, Director Ben Berkowitz

A fantastic drama about a young adult struggling to make it big as a DJ. Great acting and a strong story which made for a very entertaining film.

Sadly I wont be able to see any more movies on Sunday as I won’t be in the city. Otherwise I would be going to more!! If you get a chance, take a peek at the schedule and catch a film There’s still plenty of films to see. You won’t be disappointed.

Guess who will be going to the Toronto Jewish Film Festival next year? ME!!

I am  really nervous about running the Toronto Marathon this Sunday. Let me rephrase that – I AM FREAKING. I have every doubt, fear, and have zero confidence at the moment. This happens to me before every race so I should be use to it. But I’m not. I have done 3 half marathons and before each race, I am a wreck. Go figure.

I seriously did not think I was going to register today, but I am going to. I decided last nite (nothing like waiting to the last minute) after reading some positive comments from my facebook friends. I seem to always resister the day of the expo, but that’s because I want to see what the weather is like (ok ok..I’m a bit of a princess). Guess what? It’s going to be 16 degrees and sunny on Sunday. Talk about “Perfect Conditions”.

So let’s review why I am so nervous:

1. I have only been training on a treadmill.. It’s weird – I know. I did not go out for a run once outdoors.

2. My longest run has only been 9 miles. I am hoping praying, that the rest is all mental.

3. I am registering late, so it will cost me $105 to participate. This is a problem, as I can think of a few restaurants I could go to with this money.

4. I am SLOWREALLY SLOW. In fact with each race, I get slower and slower  – so why am I doing this? (don’t answer).

I have resolved to do the following things to help me on Sunday:

1. I am NOT going to wear a watch. I am just going to shuffle my way thru the 21 km and just enjoy the moment.

2. I am going to celebrate  this accomplishment and go to Poutini’s on Sunday nite. It’s about the only thing I will be able to afford!!

3. I am going to try and repeat this mantra throughout the race “one step at a time…one step at a time” and “you can do this…you can do this”.

Happy to hear from any of my readers with words of encouragement. These comments really do help me.

P.S. after this race…I am going to cross train for the next few months and get ready for a Sprint Triathlon. I didn’t do one last year and I really missed it. I know I will go thru the same “pre-race” jitters but for some reason I am less of a wreck. Except for the swim part. Stay tuned for a similar blog post.

Wish me luck.

I’ve read blog posts about this question before and thought that it was clever, so I’m copying  borrowing the idea. (I’m honest). Here is the answer to WHAT’S IN MY PURSE?

a) I want to talk about the purse first. It’s from Target and was only $19.99. I am simply loving it. It’s the perfect size and has all the colors that I want to wear this spring.

b) The Body Shop Plum Lip Balm called “Born Lippy”. I’m impressed with the flavor, the texture and the color. #happy.

c) my Iphone. OMG – if my phone wasn’t in my purse I wouldn’t be able to leave the house!!

d) my keys (naturally) which now has a Sobeys and Goodlife pass attached to it. What a brilliant concept. Bye Bye Membership card (which I always lost) and hello SWIPE.

e) my Michael Kors wallet which could be a purse on it’s own. I’ve been enjoying this wallet for 2 years now but probably should buy one in a zippy color. (one day).

f) Mentos Gum called UP 2 U – 2 flavors, 1 pack, you decide. I’m a total sucker for new products so I picked up sweet mint and bubble fresh on my last trip to the States.

g) Floss. Can’t live without my Oral B Satin floss. Thanks @ToothFairy1210 for always making sure I have a good supply!!

What else should I be carrying in my purse?:

a) a small point and shoot camera. I love my DSLR but kinda miss my point and shoot on occasion.

b) a pen

c) money. That’s right – money.  I rarely have money on me and there are moments where I really need a quarter for a grocery basket!!

Now it’s your turn. What’s in Your Purse?

Do you do the same things ALL the time? i.e go to movies, go for dinner, go to the theatre. Well, I have a suggestion!

Head out to see Les Coquettes.  I promise you that this will not be a boring evening and it’s definitely something different. Not off -the -charts different but certainly different.

Here’s a bit more info about Les Coquettes. They are a talented group of cabaret performers with a modern twist. It was the perfect evening that combined great entertainment with great food.

We started off the nite with cocktails while listening to live music being played by the talented Tyler Yarema . Then dinner arrived and then the show started. Please note that you can either go for dinner and see the show, or just go to the show. I love that there’s two options.

If you go for dinner, I can assure you that you will have an amazing dinner. Chef Woods from CWCatering, certainly knows what he is doing in the kitchen as my salad, main course and dessert were fantastic.  In fact, everyone at my table was thrilled with their meal.

See what I mean?

As for the show: Totally entertaining in a very tasteful way. The MC was brilliant – she was funny and cheeky and really got the audience warmed up. The different acts that were performed by Les Coquettes were fun, entertaining and very professional. There were lots of smiling audience members – that’s for sure.

A few hours zipped by and we all walked out reviewing the fantastic evening – perfect food and a perfect show! Not to mention, that it was SOMETHING DIFFERENT and not just your typical nite out for dinner and a movie.

I highly recommend going to see Les Coquettes. Upcoming shows will be taking place April 4th, April 15th and April 22nd.

For Further info: Click on their website : Les Coquettes or call 1 877 821 7803.

This past year has been a busy one so I haven’t read as much as I would like to. But I knew while on vacation, I would be sitting on the beach for HOURS (and hours) and would resume my relationship with my beloved Kobo!! I did my homework and spent some time on GoodReads, Kobo, SavvyReader  and Rayment’s Reading Rants and Rambling. After a lot of clicking, I finally selected my “vacation reading”. Yay for me!!

When I selected these books – please keep in mind that I was looking for books that were going to be perfect for  the “Beach”. i.e I wasn’t selecting a 600 page book or anything terribly serious. Guess what? Mission Accomplished

Here’s what I read:

1) Hilarity Ensues by Tucker Max

Please don’t judge me but I simply love his writing style and I love his stories (again, please don’t judge me).  I can’t believe how many times I laugh out loud when I read what type of trouble this guys gets into. I have read both of his other books and this one did not disappoint.

2) BossyPants by Tina Fey

A Winner!!

Again, I laughed out loud and read several passages out loud to my mom. I really enjoyed  this book and truly hope that she continues to write. PS When I wear my glasses – I’ve been told that I kind of look like her.

3) The Lover’s Dictionary: A Novel by David Levithan

I was so sad when this book ended as it was beautifully written. The format of this book is so unique and his writing style was unique too.

4) I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

It’s. A. Beach. Book. Period. I’m not going to tell you to rush out and buy it but if you are looking for something light and fluffy – this is it.

5) Before I Fall Asleep by S.J. Watson

This book totally surprised me. I couldn’t read this book fast enough.  PS Wouldnt surprise me, if this book becomes a movie one day

6)  Dreams of Joy by Lisa See

I’ve read her other two novels (1. Peony in Love 2. Sunflower and The Secret Fan) and was hoping that I would like this book too. I did. I enjoyed the characters, and the story and learning more about this time period in China.

7) Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman. This was probably not an easy book for Deborah Feldman to write, but I applaud her for her courage. I enjoyed this book and from the get-go, I was immersed quickly into her world. I hope there is a sequel to this book so we can learn more about her struggles and growth as she adapts into the secular world.

7 day vacation and 7 Books…..clearly I was in the mood to read!! I hope I continue to read throughout the year and not just when I’m on a beach. Any other book recommendations.?Please share.

It’s winter (well kind of)  and generally that means that I like to curl up in a movie theatre and watch movies. You certainly won’t find me watching movies in the summer, unless it’s raining outside. Now, I’m not a movie critic but I wanted to share with you some of the movies I have seen over the last few months.

Here’s a list of 8 Movies and 8 Reviews:

1. War Horse: I wanted to see this Steven Speilberg movie only because Steven Speilberg directed it….not because of the story or the horses!! I’m glad I saw it as it really did capture my attention. It was a perfect Sunday afternoon escape.

2. The Artist: I saw this movie, immediately after reviewing all the rave reviews. It was indeed a “different” type of movie and well acted.  Would I rave about it? No.. but I wasn’t sorry that I saw it.

3. The Descendants: Watching George Clooney for an hour and 50 minutes – is never a bad thing. Oops Im suppose to be reviewing the movie and not rating how gorgeous the actors are!! I can’t say I loved this film as much as everyone else did.

4. The Iron Lady: If Meryll Street doesn’t win best actress for her role in Iron Lady..I will scream. She is just brilliant in this role. As for the movie – I found it totally entertaining and loved it.

5. Mission Impossible: I like Tom Cruise and I like action movies, therefore I liked this movie. It’s not  a brilliant movie but it’s exactly the type of movie I enjoy.

6. Tinker Tailor Solidier Spy:  I cant review this movie as I didn’t understand any of it even though I was awake for the entire film. Please don’t judge me.!!

7. Hugo: Again this movie was getting great reviews so I felt I had to see it. Guess what? I had the BEST nap during this movie. I really should see it again.

8. The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo:  I liked the book and I liked the movie. This movie certainly captured my attention.

Movies still on my list: My Week with Marilyn. I hear the acting is outstanding and want to be able to compare it to Meryll Streep in The Iron Lady.

Thankfully, companies like General Mills understands movie-lovers, so they partnered with Cineplex Odeon to make it easier for people like me to continue to head to the cinema!! Click here to read more about this fabulous offer:

https://lifemadedelicious.ca/Home/OffersandPerks/Cineplex.aspx

What movies have you seen? What movies are on your list to see? As always – would love to hear from you.

One more thing: Check out this awesome website  Bind Movie Critic. I stumbled upon Tommy Edisons’ website on twitter and I am really enjoying his reviews.

Disclosure: I am part of the Life Made Delicious Blogger program and I receive special perks as part of my affiliation with this group. The opinions on this blog are my own.”
