As you know I’m a huge fan of the National Post Gastropost missions. I’m such a fan that not only do I participate on a regular basis, but I decided I wanted to interview them too! For those of you who might not know what Gastropost is all about – I will explain: Every week Gastropost posts a mission (i.e a cookie mission) and people (like me and many many others) submits a photo thru Twitter, Facebook, email or Instagram. It’s as simple as that. On Saturday – the cookie photo that you submitted might be included in the Gastropost section.

Gastropost staff chat with a George Brown Culinary Arts student!

Here’s the interview:

a) Who initiated the initial idea to have a Gastropost feature in the
National Post?

There were a few people involved. In early 2012 National Post and
Postmedia Network Inc. (which owns National Post as well as a number of
other well-known newspapers like Ottawa Citizen, Calgary Herald, Vancouver
Sun, etc) started working on a plan to be more directly engaged with
readers in a different way. We recognized that Toronto was in the middle
of a food renaissance and that there were lots of food lovers who were not
only passionate about food and their city, but also had a lot of expertise
to share. In mid-May we came up with the Gastropost concept of weekly food
missions, then worked with the excellent National Post design and
editorial teams to launch it just two weeks later. We move fast!

b) I’m assuming everyone is a “foodie” who works on Gastropost… True of
False?

We love food, yes! But honestly, we’ve always believed that Gastroposters
themselves are the experts. Even before we launched we made sure to
connect and involve a few of the community’s leading voices, and now we’re
learning new things from our members every day. (Incidentally, we also
discovered early on that even some hard-core food people don’t consider
themselves “foodies,” which is why we talk about “food lovers” instead. We
try to make room for diehard foodies and more casual food lovers alike.)

c) Have you ever received a food photo and found yourself going out later
that day to purchase that item?

You have no idea how difficult it can be to watch all of your delicious
food photos roll in all day! Our office collectively gains a few pounds
every time we host one of the more decadent or indulgent missions. So yes,
we for sure look to Gastroposters for both home cooking and dining out
inspiration.

d) When was Gastropost launched?

In late May 2012 we sent our first mission ‹ simply, “Eat something
delicious!” ‹ to a small handful of Gastropost pioneers, the results of
which were in National Post for the first time on June 2nd. We’ve been in
the paper every Saturday since, and a few weekdays as well, meaning this
week’s salad mission is mission number 35!

e) How many submissions do you normally receive a week?

As you might expect it varies a bit from week to week. We’ve had as many
as 300 different people complete a single mission, and often some people
complete the mission multiple times, meaning we would have received even
more than 300 individual missions. Since we’re growing, more missions are
being completed each week.

f) What’s been the most successful social media platform for
Gastropost…twitter, instagram or Facebook

That depends. Twitter is great for following and chatting with members,
which we love to do, and probably explains why we currently have more
followers on Twitter than anywhere else. Because it’s more visual we love
using Facebook to feature posts and announce new missions, and Facebook
polls do very well for us too. We only started posting mission
announcements to Instagram a couple months ago and we had a few hundred
followers before posing our first image, so there’s obviously a lot of
potential there. As far as how people complete missions, Instagram is
number one.

g) What’s the feedback been like?

Overwhelming and humbling. It’s so amazing how much people love Gastropost
and how expertly missions get completed. It’s motivating, inspiring and a
big part of why we love our jobs.

Congratulations to the entire team at Gastropost. What a great concept!!

Dear Restaurant Owners:

I have been involved with social media now for the last three years and have always been an advocate that restaurants should be using twitter and facebook.

I know for a fact that when restaurants engage with me, I will most certainly  be “checking out” that their restaurant to show some “love” right back at them. Case in point: Table 17. They engaged with me so much, that I organized TWO tweet ups there.

I’m a little slow with “liking” restaurants on facebook but lately have gotten up to speed. (what took me so long?). One weekend, I saw THREE  facebook updates that interested me:

a) Butter Avenue posted: Matcha Latte is now available.

Perfect for a Winter Day

b) LaBamboche posted: Here’s a photo of our bacon and blood orange macaron

c) SmashCake Desserts: She posted on twitter about her frozen peanut butter cheesecake cookies. I was so intrigued that I ordered 4 of them in a heartbeat. I would have never heard of this young entrepreneur based in Toronto had I not seen her tweet.

Guess who went running to both restaurants? ME. That’s right. What I’m trying to say is: Facebook and Twitter really work. There is a ROI – it’s hard to tell because not everyone announces that they came to your restaurant cause they saw your post but it DEFINETELY works.

However you have to use it and manage it. You can’t just post or tweet and not check in for a week. This defeats the purpose.

It also defeats the purpose if your staff do not know that the restaurant is on twitter and what the twitter username is – this actually drives me crazy. I can’t spread the love about your restaurant on twitter if none of  your staff know the twitter username!

Ok – enough said. I think you get it.

PS. Would love to know from anyone else who has made purchases as a result of facebook or twitter.

Oh how I love these conferences for Digitally Connected women!!  Five years ago, I would have never have thought that I would one day be “Digitally Connected” !! I barely knew how to download photos let alone to blog.

This is now my third conference in three years and every year I’m excited to attend. I start to follow the twitter feed  @SCConference and #SCCTO and before you know it, I’m starting to plan.

Here’s whats going thru my mind as I prepare for Shes Connected 2012:

a)  Plan my outfit. I know it will be something comfortable. Not to fancy but not to casual.  I might even get my hair straightened. That is – if I could find a spare 30 minutes.

What to wear? Decisions..Decisions..Decisions

b) Wear my Twitter Necklace that I bought for myself from Blend Creations a few years ago.

The perfect necklace to wear to this event.

c) Bring Phone Chargers and the Computer Charger: This year, I’m going to label my names on those items (me. smart).

d) Bring business cards. (Even if they have the wrong info on them – don’t ask)

e) Bring this bag. Seriously…I have learned my lesson. Notice it’s on wheels and it has a handle to pull?

The best bag ever for my Mac, Kobo, Ipad etc. Bought it at Costco years ago

f) Take the TTC to get there. It’s indeed the better way.

g) SMILE and CONNECT with other fabulous participants as much as I can. That’s what it’s all about.

h) LEARN. Yes – I need to learn. Even after 3 years of blogging – I need more skills.

i) RELAX AND HAVE FUN.

Only a few days left till the conference begins and I’m super stoked.

For more info:

Shes Connected, Oct 19 & 20th, Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

It’s been a year since I moved into my apartment so I thought it would be an ideal time to celebrate that occasion. Here’s a list of key ingredients to hosting a great party.

1) The Invite List: I included some twitter friends and some “real friends”. A perfect mix. Just look how everyone is chatting away in this photo. There were 12 women in total and it was just the right amount given the size of my apartment!!

There were 12 women in total and it was a perfect mix.

2) CREWMEN & Co: I had a (gorgeous) bartender for the evening, courtesy of Crewmen & Co and let’s just say that my guests “loved” the eye candy and the fabulous cocktails that he created. I would hire this company again in a heart beat. Our bartender was engaging, professional and knew his way around the bar.  He was certainly a highlight of the evening!!

Um..hello…can I have a martini please?”

3) The Drinks: I had a great line up of Skyy Vodka, Great Lakes Beer (the Pumpkin Ale was just released, by the way) bottlegreen Sparkling Presses , 3 types of juices, wine, club soda, and tonic water, limes and lemons. Everyone was happy. I was thrilled to find out that Skyy Vodka has the fewest impurities among leading vodkas AND ZERO CARBS. This vodka was perfect for my #nocarb diet!!

Something for everyone!!

4) The Food: I served some amazing nosh that I had been “saving” (no I am not a hoarder) from my trips to Ottawa, Buffalo, Montreal and even Detroit. The black garlic was a hit…that’s for sure. Oh yeah – the Chocolate Chex got a lot of love too.

Black garlic that I bought in Montreal. Hope to find it here in Toronto one day soon

5) Good Music: I finally subscribed to Rdio but there was so much chatter that I’m not sure anyone heard the music.

6) Creating an atmosphere: This is my favorite part. I finally had an excuse to visit my favorite flower shops on Avenue Road and Davenport. Not to mention, I brought out  some pewter serving dishes that hadn’t been used in a while. Here’s what the table looked like:

Seriously….. throwing a party isn’t hard work and I can’t wait to throw another one. Nothing like surrounding yourself with new and old friends on a Saturday nite.

Try it!!

Once again, I discovered something fun on Twitter. It’s called Gastropost and it’s a brilliant concept for foodies like me. Every week they post a mission and every week I am addicted to accomplishing this mission (I know I know – I have too much spare time on my hands). One week, the mission was “basil vs mint”  and another week the mission was called “we love tomatoes” and guess who tries to complete most missions? moi.

In August,  I completed a mission that was called “food on a stick”. I was thrilled when I opened up the the National Post on a Saturday to discover that I was featured in the Gastropost column. (see bel0w….I’m the Gastroposter eating deep fried goodies at the CNE!!)

I love when companies embrace social media, and use it to create  a community. Gastropost is a classic example of this. I’m thrilled to be part of this and you can too. It’s just a click away …..so feel free to subscribe here.

Congratulations to the National Post for initiating this brilliant feature in your Saturday edition.

PS Not only do I think that Gastropost is fun but IT’S EASY TO USE. No downloading widgets, no uploading recipes, no linking …it’s so easy it’s not funny. Now go subscribe and complete a mission!!

Quite regularly I stumble upon new businesses/restaurants/services while on Twitter. My latest find is a start up called Spinzo.

I started to chat with them via twitter and liked what they were all about. Now I want to share with you, (dear readers) what Spinzo is all about. I am also going to run a contest today with Spinzo!! What’s super cool about this contest is the fact that I could pick any prize I wanted for my readers!!

They originally offered me an iPad as a gift but I said “hmmm…my readers are mostly foodies so what about a gift to KITCHEN STUFF PLUS. Thats right…you could win a $250 gift certificate to Kitchen Stuff Plus to buy anything you want.

Love. This. Store.

When I went to visit my local Kitchen Stuff Plus, I was eyeing this piece of kitchen equipment. Now who wouldn’t want to  win a $250 Gift Certificate towards a purchase of one of these beauties?

One of my favorite appliances in my kitchen!!

Ok..back to Spinzo. Who are they? They are a Canadian Startup dedicated to offering dynamic pricing on great local experiences.

Want to know how to participate in this amazing contest?

All contestants have to do is post their purchase requests to the Spinzo Facebook page or Spinzo Twitter page.

These purchase requests can be about anything!

Important: (really important) Please use @momwhoruns in these requests: i.e : “I heard about #SpinzoSavesTO from @MomWhoRuns and I really want a new Kitchen Aid” (or another request like pots, cutlery etc)

Post requests to: Facebook.com/SpinzoToronto  OR on Twitter.com: @spinzotoronto)

No need to leave a comment below…just head over to the Spinzo Facebook page or onto Twitter!!

So what do you think? Easy peazy contest non? Not to mention, a gift certificate to Kitchen Stuff Plus is SWEET. The contest will run from Tuesday Aug 21st to Tuesday September 4th at midnite. This contest is open to anyone in Toronto and the gift certificate can be used at any of the Kitchen Stuff Plus locations. Random.org will used to select the winner and that winner has two weeks to get in touch with me. Otherwise a new winner will be selected.

Social Media and Job Hunting. It works!! Here’s my Story:

I went away on vacation, only to return last Wednesday to find out that I was unemployed. I immediately updated my profile on Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter.  I stated that I was “Seeking Employment as a Sales Rep or a Community Manager”. Immediately I had two replies on Facebook to contact two separate companies and two retweets on twitter.I was impressed.

By 1 p.m…I had a meeting with 3 foodie friends (@TheBumpercrop, @afoodgypsy @lisataerk). They brainstormed with me and delivered a “go-Vicky-go” type of speech.

The pep talk worked!!

On Thursday, I met with @nearafar who also answered some more job hunting questions and gave me another pep talk.

On Friday, I received emails from @HorriblePeanut @FiestaCupcakes @CDNFoodieGiirl, and @Labamboche with leads. I was truly feeling supported by my twitter friends. Oh yeah – there was another friend (who sadly is not on twitter) who sent me numerous emails with ads too.

On Sunday I met with @sackman66 at 7:45 a.m for TWO hours of networking. WOW..I was on a roll. My friends were really there for me and I was ever so grateful.

On Monday morning, I had a phone call with someone from twitter who was looking for some assistance with her start up .We even met for coffee in the afternoon. Sadly it wasn’t a great fit but once again “twitter’ made the connection (thru a retweet cause I wasnt following her).

On Monday nite, I finally sent out my resume to one of the companies that contacted me thru Facebook earlier last week.

On Tuesday morning, I heard from her and at 2 p.m I was in the office…. armed with my MacBook, iPad, and iPhone….ready to work!!

Now how awesome is this story!! Whats even more awesome is I’m working with a company that I really believe in and when I walked into the office I knew FOUR people (thru twitter of course).

I have to finish this blog entry with this photo. The office has this machine in the kitchen:

It’s a VITA MIX and my boss was all too happy to demonstrate how it works!! This means, I was treated to this delicious bowl of hot soup that was made in less than 10 minutes.

I am now working for Shes Connected and I’m beyond thrilled to be part of this team.

Morale of the story: Use Social Media if you are job hunting and don’t be afraid to change your profile!!

Most of the tweet ups I attend are at restaurants, however this week I am hosting a Shabbat Tweet up in my apartment.  What does this mean? This means that all the guests are on twitter and they are all “foodies” in a big way plus 99% of the guests are Jewish.

The food served at this tweet up will be traditional Friday nite food except for the fact that my kitchen is vegetarian. (small detail). This means no one will be enjoying chicken soup, chopper liver or brisket.

I decided that the meal definitely required a potato knish. They are easy to make and everyone loves them.

What is a knish? Its basically puffed pastry with potato filling. I cheat and use a mix. Once we did a taste test between fresh mashed potatoes and the mix and no one could tell the difference. Therefore, I use the mix out of pure convenience.

My mom makes them to perfection. Little tiny bundles. Mine aren’t as  pretty and I hope she isn’t reading this, shaking her head and muttering “why didn’t she watch me in the kitchen?”.

POTATO KNISHES:

Ingredients:

1 package of puffed pastry

Mashed potatoes…(I made 2 servings according to the instructions on the side of the box)

METHOD:

1. Make the mashed potatoes according to the directions on the box. SEASON generously with salt and pepper

2. Roll out the dough and then cut into squares. Forgive me – but I don’t measure how big these squares should be. Fill with a tablespoon of mashed potatoes.

3. Shape into ????. I wish I could describe how to do this step but I can’t. It would have been brilliant of me to prepare a video of this step. One day – I promise!!

4. The goal is to make them into little bundles.

4. Egg wash each knish so they get a nice shine to them.

5. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. The final product should look like the first photo at the top left of the page.

Try eating knishes with sour cream.  I also love the fact that they freeze BEAUTIFULLY.

Can’t wait to serve them tomorrow at the Shabbat Tweet up.

T’is the sesaon to drink eggnog. I know it’s Christmas when I see eggnog in the stores and will always buy a litre (or two). I also know it’s winter when Starbucks introduces their Gingerbread Latte, Eggnog Latte, and Peppermint Latte. Seems like winter is a good time to drink flavorful drinks. Last nite, I had a chili hot chocolate at Grindhouse in Kensington Market…but will blog about hot chocolate in another blog post.

I only seem to drink my eggnog pure  i.e. without any alcohol in it, but always  in small quantities. Eggnog is not good for the waistline even if I’m MOMWHORUNS….and these days I’m running on the treadmill 4x a week.

Back to the eggnog. I decided to do an eggnog taste test from 3 different brands:

The nutrional information is as follows:

Neilson Light Eggnog:  Per 1/2 cup – 110 calories,  2% Fat (4% saturated fat), Protein 3 g

Harmony Organic Eggnog – not listed (interesting)

So Nice Noel Nog:  Per 1 cup – 120 calories, total fat 5%, Protein 6 g

Here are the results:

Neilson Light Eggnog: watery (very), dark yellow color, sugary

So Nice Noel Nog: strong nutmeg flavor, beige, you know it’s soya milk but I don’t mind actually

Harmony Organic Eggnog: best color – lovely and yellow, tastes like eggnog – no overwhelming nutmeg flavor,

I was also lucky enough to experience a HOME MADE EGGNOG this past weekend. (with rum). It was totally different than the commercial eggnog that I’m use to, so it was a real treat. (thanks @JasonRees).

Real Eggnog - not from a carton or a jar

Basically I like eggnog, eggnog ice cream, eggnog lattes….except eggnog does not like me. Sad but true. I’m delighted that the stores only carry it for 6 weeks a  year.

Cute story before I finish the blog entry: Two years ago, I saw a tweet declaring that there was no more Harmony Organic Eggnog to be found in the GTA.  I read the tweet while visiting Garden Foods in Bolton and happen to notice that they still had a few bottles left – so I picked them up. I then tweeted “just bought a few bottles. Happy to share”. I met her at the bottom of her condo later that week. Twitter is awesome…and Harmony Eggnog is awesome too.

Who else is an eggnog fan?

Once again, I went to an event as a result of a tweet I saw on twitter between @redhunttravel and @InnisGunnCanada.  The event was an Innis & Gunn Beer Dinner at Fynns Temple Bar. (489 King West). What’s not to like?  I was SO going to this event.

Here was the menu that was presented by Chef Patrick Narain:

One: Mulligatawny Soup and a Mango Chutney Crostini

Two: Dark Chocolate Chicken Wings served with a Roasted Corn, Jicama and Mango Salad

Three: Tender Lamb Stew with Root Vegetables, wrapped in an Arugula Boxty

Four: Cranberry Bread Pudding topped with El Dorado Rum Custard

The above dishes were paired with the following beers (note: I did not eat at this event – I was strictly interested in the beer)

-Innis & Gunn Original

-Innis & Gunn Rum Cask

-Innis & Gunn Spiced Rum – a new beer for me to taste

-Innis & Gunn Winter Beer 2011 – another new beer for me to taste

-Innis & Gunn Highland Cask – yet another new beer for me to taste. (which is why I wanted to attend this event).

Each beer was described ….color, nose, palate, finish and food suggestion. Naturally I enjoyed all of them (in moderation of course, I’m not even sure I consumed 8 oz in total last nite). There is something so unique about this beer – I must admit, I really do like it.

As a result of last nites great event, I ran to the LCBO to buy 3 gift packs. I can’t think of a better gift for my beer loving friends.

3 gifts for 3 beer loving friends

Cheers!!

P.S A special thank you to the team at Innis & Gunn for accommodating me as a last minute guest.
